Make that a pair of celebrity shoes and you’ve got yourself not just a smile, but a guaranteed ear-to-ear grin! Enter Soles4Souls, a charity that’s allowing the average shoe-drooling fashionista to purchase a pair of designer shoes fresh off the tootsies of the stars.
The charity, established for over a year now, was brought to life when its founder, Wayne Esley, was inspired to help those in need after the tragic tsunami hit Southeast Asia. Since then, organizations from international retailers to local churches the world over have sprung to aid and have donated more than 14 million pairs of shoes to those in need. (Their site features a live count of the number of shoes that have been donated to date!)
The foot-frenzied charity is playing a major role in Barefoot Week, a week long series of shoe-collecting and awareness-raising events for all those in need of everything from work boots to runners.
And what better way to garner awareness and increase donations than by having celebrities bare it all? Barefoot that is! A-list stars from Justin Timberlake to Chelsea Hander are donating their footwear to the Celebrity Shoe Auction, accessible online at www.charitybuzz.com and Manolo-minded shoe collectors everywhere are jumping at the chance to bid on them.
Sports fans should be especially keen to bid on the pairs of shoes athletes are putting up for auction; buyers can purchase not only famous shoes, but also a little bit of sports history! The highest fetching pair of shoes thus far? That would be a pair of tennis sneakers Roger Federer wore when he won the 2011 Qatar Open, at over $1000. Despite Federer’s hefty heel price tag, other pairs start as low as $100.
Fret not, fashionistas; there’s more than enough stylish slippers to go around. None other than Sarah Jessica Parker has donated several pairs of Carrie Bradshaw-worthy heels, as well as other well-soled starlets such as the Kardashian sisters and Paris Hilton. Male fashionistas need not despair either; Sir Elton John has donated an undoubtedly trendy set of sneakers, and other dapper male celebs have donated a well.
With so many amazing items to choose from, sports fans and those dressed-to-kill will find it easier than ever to help those in need.
More than just a charity, Souls4Soles is also doing its part to help the Earth through the recycling of gently used footwear. With the hundreds of thousands of barely worn shoes that get thrown into our already-congested landfills, Soles4Souls now accepts second-hand shoes at hundred of locations throughout Canada and the United States. Those dated loafers sitting in your closet could end up on the feet of some one who wouldn’t have anything on theirs otherwise. Green and good? Sounds like the great idea to us!
