Beyond the Norm: Five Great Date Ideas

It’s not Valentine’s Day. It’s not her Birthday. It’s not Christmas. In fact, there is nothing special about today except that you are about to take your girlfriend, wife, or soon to be significant other on the best date she’s ever had.

The perfect date doesn’t take millions of dollars, an expensive sports car or roses piled high by the dozen. In fact, in terms of planning the perfect date, less is often much more. When it comes to dating, women are simple. In the end, we just want to feel special; from flowers and romantic dinners to weekend getaways, it doesn’t matter what you do as long as it’s something. It can be as simple as picking up her favourite munchies at the grocery store, or suggesting a movie you know she’s been dying to see. Heck, buy her an ice cream on your way home from work and you’ll be in her good books for weeks to come.

That said, women appreciate a little bit of forethought. So, in preparation for your next romantic rendezvous, why not surprise her with something more than “just nice”? At a loss for things to do that haven’t been done before? Here are some sure fire date ideas that are guaranteed to knock the socks off any girl, no matter how high her expectations.

Enjoy a Romantic Sunrise

Find a park overlooking the city and pick her up at the crack of dawn for breakfast by sunrise. Park the car and lay the blanket down just as the sun comes up. Think strawberries and fresh croissants—and here’s some advice; don’t cheap out on the baked goods. We may not allow ourselves to indulge on a regular basis, but when melt-in-your-mouth pastries happen to land in front of us, we’re more than willing to dive in (and the excuse to forego self-restraint is greatly appreciated). Is there a better way to start the day than sipping on champagne and orange juice, tucked under a blanket with the person you love? I doubt it. Trust me; this date will bring you closer in more ways than one.

Volunteer Together

A great way to spend time together while doing your bit to better society is by volunteering. A lot of guys shake their heads at this one, but women love to see a man roll up his sleeves and lend a hand.

Seek opportunities to volunteer in your local neighbourhood, and then take her out on the town for a well deserved lunch celebrating your commitment to the community as well as each other. Look for organizations or events taking place in the community like sporting events, food banks, animal shelters etc. Think of this as an investment—I guarantee that the good you do during your date will be redirected your way at the end of the day tenfold.

Plan a Theme Night

Theme nights can be really fun and allow you to jump off the deep end when it comes to creativity. To begin with, think of something special shared between you and your partner. This can be somewhere you’ve been, a movie you’ve watched, a favourite dinner you shared, anything!

Need an example? Say you had a memorable weekend in NYC. Put on some Frank Sinatra, buy some cheesecake and watch Moonstruck. Re-enacting fun moments you’ve shared together and knowing that you put so much thought into planning the date will instantly put her in the mood for romance.

Produce a Video Tribute

Spend a day together doing seemingly regular things. Go for a walk, grab a bite to eat, pick up groceries etc. This time however, take a camera with you and take pictures and video recordings of everything you do, including the funny, the ugly, and everything in between. After the date, let her know what you’ve been doing and suggest making a video that captures the sheer wonder of life together. Edit out the boring and focus on the parts that epitomize your relationships; old, new or still in the works. Boost the video with a soundtrack of your day together. This date requires a little technical skill but you can do it, I believe in you.

Get Uncomfortable

Undoubtedly there are things that one or both of you are good at but why not try something that neither of you have done before? If you’re both artistic, sign up for a rock climbing class. If you’re more an athletic pair, why not try a cooking class? If your interests are mixed, why not sign up for something really exotic like a Latin dance class, or introduction to Yoga? Acting like idiots as you try to overcome a common challenge is a great way to bond quickly. Odds are you’ll learn something new and have a fun time (without the pressure of trying to impress) doing it.
