Mavericks Owner Cuban Comments on Colin Kaepernick Situation
If you have never heard of Colin Kaepernick, you probably either live under a rock or never watch ESPN.
Kaepernick, a former NFL quarterback is currently a free agent, still looking for a new contract. After leading the San Francisco 49ers to the Superbowl a few years back, Kaepernick’s effectiveness faded, but the young signal caller was still able to receive plenty of media attention.
Last season, Kaepernick decided to kneel during the singing of the American national anthem in protest, to raise awareness for inequality and racial prejudice. From then, Kaepernick continued to do more for what he believed in, donating hundreds of thousands of dollars for the cause.
The NFL preseason is now underway, yet Kaepernick is unemployed. There are 32-NFL teams. Each team usually carries three quarterbacks, that makes 96-professional quarterbacks in total. And somehow, Kaepernick is not on the list of top 96-quarterbacks in the world and remains jobless.
There have been plenty of talk that he is being blackballed by owners of the NFL and while there are many NFL players who have committed crimes and are still on a professional roster, Kaepernick, who stood up for a cause he believes in, in a free country, cannot get a contract.
The backlash that the NFL has been receiving is ongoing and recently, Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks commented on the situation.
“I don’t know what his status is in the NFL, but I’m glad the NBA doesn’t have a politician litmus test for our players,” Cuban told the Washington Post. “I’d like to think we encourage our players to exercise their constitutional rights.”
While a similar situation did occur in the NBA with Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, who believed he was blackballed by the NBA after being unable to receive even a tryout opportunity from teams after refusing to participate in the National Anthem, it is important to note that that was 20-years ago and something that would not happen in the NBA today.
The wait continues for Kaepernick, but Cuban is clearly on his side!
