Adam Silver, NBA Holds First Ever NBA 2K League Draft Today
The NBA draft can wait.
The newly announced NBA 2K League will have its inaugural draft today. Here’s a quick primer for those unfamiliar with the NBA’s entry into the world of eSports:
The NBA 2K League is a professional eSports league that was co-founded by the NBA and Take-Two Interactive Software (the creators of NBA 2K).
Essentially, games will be played as 5 on 5 NBA 2K, with each player controlled by a different competitor. Competitors will not be able to play as NBA players. Instead, they will play in Pro-Am mode, which means they will choose from an archetypical character containing a fixed set of skills.
17 NBA franchises are participating in the NBA 2K League. The eventual plan is for all 30 teams to be represented.
The season starts in May, and ends in August. In addition to weekly games, the league will have 3 in-season tournaments, and a postseason. A $1million prize will be given to the winner of each of these special events.
Games will be played on PC, though the use of other controllers is permitted.
Like NBA teams, each 2K team will have a front-office, complete with a GM and team director.
For fans who want to watch, each game will be streamed online. A national TV television deal is in the works as well.
Let the games begin!
