Golden State Warriors Coach Rips into Proposed NFL Anthem Policy
“They’re basically trying to use the anthem as fake patriotism, nationalism, scaring people.”
In a pre-game media session, Golden State Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr ripped into the NFL for their proposed anthem policy. NFL owners have recently proposed a 15-yard penalty be awarded to those players who kneel during the singing of the national anthem.
“It’s idiotic,” said the coach candidly. “But that’s how the NFL has handled their business. I’m proud to be in a league that understands patriotism in America is about free speech, peacefully protesting.”
Never one to keep his mouth shut on the matter, Kerr has frequently voiced his displeasure with American politics, the string of racism in the country, and the blatant injustice amongst NFL ownership.
“I think our leadership in the NBA understands that the NFL players were kneeling to protest police brutality, to protest racial inequality,” Said Kerr. “They weren’t disrespecting the flag or the military. Our president decided to make it about that and the NFL followed suit and pandered to their fan base.
“That created this hysterical … It’s kind of what’s wrong with our country right now. People in high places are trying to divide us, divide loyalties and make this about the flag, as if the flag is something other than what it really is.“It’s a representation of what we’re about — diversity, peaceful protest, right to free speech. It’s really ironic, actually, what the NFL is doing.”
The Warriors are currently down 3-2 to the Houston Rockets in the NBA’s Western Conference Finals. As the series shifts back to the Bay Area, the Warriors look to knot up the series with the hopes of eventually returning to a fourth straight NBA Finals.
