ESPN: Toronto Raptors Attempting to Shed Big Contracts

Although the Toronto Raptors have already made a huge move by acquiring Kawhi Leonard (and shipping out DeMar DeRozan), there may be more to come.

According to ESPN.com’s Ian Begley, the Raptors are looking to make further trades, in an attempt to shed salary.

Possible candidates for a trade include forward Serge Ibaka and centre Jonas Valanciunas. Ibaka has two years and nearly $45 million left on his contract, while Valanciunas is scheduled to earn more than $16.5 million in 2018-19, with a player option for the 2019-20 season.

Though both players were solid contributors to last year’s 59-win team, Ibaka and Valanciunas’ potential returns in a trade are questionable given each Raptor’s hefty cap hit. With Leonard now on the team, Toronto is clearly in win-now mode, and might be best served by sticking with what they have, at least from a basketball standpoint.
