Brooklyn Nets Star Goes Down with Horrifying Injury, Escapes Surgery
Deja vue struck the NBA in the most painful way imaginable.
A little over a year removed from Gordon Hayward’s horrific injury, the basketball world bear witness to another brutal injury. Caris LeVert, the young Brooklyn Nets star was in the midst of a career year, averaging 18.4 points per contest, cementing himself as a cornerstone player for the franchise. Highly respected by the organization by his drive and hard work off the court, it was difficult to imagine anyone not liking the 24-year old forward.
On Monday night, the Nets and the rest of the NBA was dealt a shocking blow.
In the final seconds of the first half, LeVert landed awkwardly while attempting to contest a drive by Minnesota Timberwolves rookie guard Josh Okogie. A gruesome looking injury left players on both sides shaken up – some in tears – praying for their fallen peer. LeVert was carted off the court with what initially looked as a right ankle injury.
On Tuesday morning, the Nets announced that LeVert dislocated his right foot, but will not require surgery. Although the team cited “moderate ligament damage”, the expectation is that LeVert will be able to return some time this season.
The following is the Nets’ statement on LeVert’s injury in full:
“Brooklyn Nets guardCaris LeVert returned to New York with the team last night and was evaluated today by Nets’ Team Orthopedist Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Following the evaluation, LeVert was diagnosed with a subtalar dislocation of the right foot.
‘Fortunately, tests performed this morning revealed that there are no fractures and only moderate ligament damage,’ said Dr. O’Malley. ‘While the optics of this injury may have appeared to be more severe, surgery will not be required. Caris will begin a period of rehabilitation with the Nets’ performance staff, following which he is expected to return to full strength and resume all basketball activities without any limitations this season.’
Updates regarding LeVert’s rehabilitation will be issued as appropriate.”
