There has never been anything conventional about the Much Music Video Awards and this year was no different. From Katy Perry arriving in an ice cream truck to the Marianas Trench showing up on the red carpet in a hot tub, this year’s MMVAs definitely topped last year’s madness. What’s most unique and fun about the MMVAs is that unlike any other award show, Much Music’s focus is not on the performers and nominees but on the mass audience that descends on Toronto’s trendy Queen Street.
Screaming fans littered the street for a sneak peak at the casts of Twilight, The Hills, The City and a slew of music performers. But most would agree that the highlight of the night was Katy Perry’s glittery performance of her summer hit, California Gurls. Between the sexy backup dancers donning bright pink cupcake dresses, the extensively decorated stage and Katy Perry’s infectious voice there was a not a dull moment.
Our favourite part though was watching the fashion on the red carpet. Twilight’s Ashley Greene, 90210’s Shanae Grimes and The City’s Whitney Port were by far the best dressed ladies of the night. They took risks and came out on top with sexy, mature and chic outfits. Host Miley Cyrus on the other hand was her usual scandalous self busting out on stage in barely-there outfits.
Justin Bieber nabbed International Video of the Year, UR Fave Video and UR Fave New Artist. Hedley won Video of the Year, Post Production of the Year and Pop Video of the Year while Drake came in third with MuchVIBE Hip-Hop Video Of The Year and Cinematography of the Year.
