Food For Thought

NBA players run an intense game, and fitness is paramount.

You can’t screw around with a thing like food. Eating well means having enough energy to play that night’s game. Too much and you’re sluggish, too little and you slow down.

If you’re someone like the Chicago Bulls’ forward Joakim Noah, you’re going to need around four thousand calories a day, almost twice the recommended daily intake of the rest of us.

Noah knows about the kind of calories it takes to compete in professional basketball. Standing at six foot eleven, two-hundred and thirty pounds, he needs the right kind of fuel to get going.

We caught up with Noah to ask him about his favourite eats.

BALLnROLL.com : Do you cook, and if so, do you prefer bbq or an indoor, hearty meal?

Joakim Noah: I don’t cook, but I’m a big fan of barbecue.

What’s your favourite food to eat?

A nice steak is always good for special events, especially after a long day of work.

With big, home-cut fries?

A baked potato.

Are you a picky eater? Does your diet differ from the off-season?

Definitely. I think in the off-season… the first month, month and a half after off season, I really don’t care. I want no rules.

Do you prefer cuisine or greasy?

It depends. I like French foods. I’m from France, so I like that, but I love McDonalds.

Pick: Steak, chicken, or fish?

Steak.

What’s your favourite restaurant to kick back with the boys?

Morton’s Steakhouse.

Which city has the best food?

I would have to say New York City.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

McDonalds.

Okay, pick: the best steakhouse or a home-cooked Sunday family dinner?

Family dinner. I don’t get that a lot, so it’s exciting to get back to a home cooked meal.

Noah played against the Raptors on Wednesday, leading to a 110-93 win, despite reports that Noah has been playing on an injured hand.

He recently injured his thumb in a win against the Kings on November 27, and again in a win against the Rockets on December 4. The Chicago Bulls have been doing well this season, with a seven game streak, and the loss of Noah to an extended leave would be a blow to the team.

We wish Noah a quick recovery on his hand. At least if he does take an extended leave, he has the great taste in food to get him through it.

Speaking of injuries, Toronto Raptors’s forward, Reggie Evans has been sitting out to recover after a broken foot in a loss to Boston last November.

We talked to him about food and learned that, out of all the meals in the day, his favourite is breakfast.

BALLnROLL.com: What’s your favourite food?

Reggie Evans: Grits, eggs, bacon, with cheese on the eggs, ham on the egg… breakfast, really.

The breakfast of champions. Bbq or a hearty indoor meal; what do you prefer?

An indoor meal.

Are you a picky eater?

Yeah.

Pick: steak, chicken or fish?

Steak.

You’re probably not a big drinker, but on special occasions, what’s your favourite drink of choice?

Dom Pérignon.

What city has the best food?

Houston.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Breakfast food.

Pick the best steakhouse, like in Chicago, or a home-cooked Sunday family dinner?

Home-cooked. Home-cooked, all day, every day.

There is no word yet as to when Evans is set to return to the Raptors, but we hope he has a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, fellow Raptor Andrea Bargnani gives us the rundown on his favourite restaurants.

BALLnROLL.com: Do you cook, and if so, what is your favourite food?

Andrea Bargnani: I don’t cook. For food, pastas, lasagna… lasagnas for sure.

Are you a picky eater, even in the off-season?

Out of the season, I’m more careful, because I don’t play, so I don’t burn as much calories as during the season, so I guess I’m more careful. During the season, not at all.

Pick: steak, chicken or fish?

It depends. I mean, steak tastes better, but steak every day is not good, so I’d have to say fish.

You’re probably not a big drinker, but on special occasions, what’s your favourite drink of choice?

I like Grappa for dinner. Wine… I like Grappa.

Do you drink every dinner?

No, once in a while.

What’s your favourite restaurant in Toronto, just to relax with a friend?

There are many… Toula, Romagna Mia… there are so many.

What city has the best food, you would say?

Other than Toronto, that’s got pretty good food, I would say New York.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I don’t know. Pasta. Something with pasta, that’s for sure.

Pick the best steakhouse, or a home-cooked family meal?

If I have to choose, home-cooked.
