Knicks Hold Their Own at the MET Ball 2011

Haute couture was the name of the game at this year’s 2011 MET Ball. The theme this year was Savage Beauty, honouring the late Alexander McQueen and debuting the Mcqueen Savage Beauty exhibition.

Representing Alexander McQueen was Sarah Burton, the up-and-coming designer responsible for the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress. The exhibition was intended as a look back at McQueen’s work.

As the fashion world has already surmised, the MET Ball coincided with the enormous attention on the royal wedding in such a way as to catapult the McQueen brand back into the spotlight. The red carpet showcased McQueen and McQueen-inspired designs.

The event was one of the most star-studded shindigs in recent memory, with appearances from Jay-Z, Beyonce, Orlando Bloom, Blake Lively, Paul McCartney, Demi Moore, Rhianna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, Lea Michele, Renee Zellwegger, Anna Wintour, and others.

Which made it an intensely glamourous evening for Amar’e Stoudemire, whose fashion aspirations and connections with such fashion luminaries as Anna Wintour are well documented. Stoudemire attended with Rachel Roy, with whom he has plans to begin a new fashion line.

Stoudemire acquitted himself well in a sharp black tux, looking great next to Rachel Roy’s shoulderless white gown with subtle patterning. Stoudemire was also spotted with recently confirmed girlfriend Ciara, who looked stunning in a gorgeous dress by Prabal Gurung.

Meanwhile, Carmelo Anthony proveed that he can nail the formal look after all in a black-on-black and a bow-tie. His wife La La Vasquez looked beautiful in an ethereal one-shouldered Vera Wang dress.

The stars of the last NBA All-Star half-time show also looked their usual dapper selves. Kanye West rarely goes anywhere without making an impression, and he wore his Tory Burch tux with loose gunslinger flare. Rihanna looked fabulous in a black lace gown by Stella McCartney.

Obviously these sorts of swanky New York events are one of the many side benefits of running with the Knicks, and Stoudemire and Anthony both looked amazing. There was also a great look from the other NBA-affiliated member, Jay-Z, who showed up in a blinding white dinner jacket. Fellow athlete Serena Williams arrived in a lacy Oscar de la Renta dress and Philip Treacy hat, making quite the splash.

An event like the MET Ball sets up expectations for the future. Not only will it be exciting to see what Burton has in mind for the Alexander McQueen brand, but Stoudemire’s appearance with Rachel Roy also makes us want to see what they can come up with this fall.

It was a night of glamour, fashion and promises; what more can you ask from the world of haute couture?
