Over the last few years many of us had forgotten about the watch, as it has been devalued and replaced by the cell phone. Why look to our wrists when we can pull out our IPhones, Smart Phones or Blackberry devices? Nothing beats a device which allows one to chat wirelessly, use the internet, GPS, have access to countless apps, speak to loved ones and tell the time instantly.
It is safe to say that since this development the wristwatch has been used as more of a luxury accessory piece than a necessity for telling time. But this may change as manufacturers and designers are developing more technical performance wristwatches.
These watches not only look good, but also display the date and time zones around the world, are water and weatherproof, are often solar powered, and have multiple dials, atomic time keeping and chronograph (stop watch) capabilities. These machines are not only practical but look great. They can be sporty yet classy, and make an ideal addition to any man’s wardrobe.
The beauty of it is that these make great sport and travel watches and can also be worn casually out for lunch with friends, working out, on the golf course or at the office.
Some makes to look for include, but are not limited to, G-shock, Edifice, Urwerk, Ulysse Nardin, Zenith, Montblanc, Brietling Citizen, Hublot, Tag Heuer, and Audmars Piguet.
Many styles are even specialized for travel, with world time, diving, outdoor adventure, or as a technical pilot’s watch. High-end fashion houses such as Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton and Chanel are also incorporating these technical watches into their collections.
Public figures, actors, and athletes such as Brad Pit, Leonardo DiCaprio, LeBron James and president Obama have been caught accessorizing with and even representing some of these high-end watches.
LeBron James has been appointed the ambassador for a line of watches from Switzerland called Le Brassus. The limited addition watch is owned by Audemars Piguet, the world’s oldest watch manufacturer. James understands how personal style is just as important off the courts as on them.
On the left, he brings justice to the Swiss watch brand in his perfectly tailored grey suit as he flashes a large round faced, gold plated, chronographic wristwatch with a black leather band. The accessory adds that little extra bling to his ensemble, exuding power and status.
On the right, he wears a slightly different, silver plated watch from the line, but this time brings it together as a casual, sporty look in a Nike tracksuit. The one thing to remember is that these watches are not only efficient little gadgets but also serve as a valuable statement piece in every man’s wardrobe.
Here, James transforms from athlete to a suave ladies man in dark denim, belted with a fitted white tee and camel safari/military inspired jacket. He matches this with gold rim aviators and a large gold plated watch with a white face peaks out below his sleeve.
Meanwhile, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio have both represented the Carrera Tachymeter model from Swiss manufacturer Tag Heuer. This stainless steel, mechanical watch has a 41mm diameter casing and is water resistant for up to 50 meters. It is evident by its sheer size and craftsmanship that this is a true man’s watch, and one you can be proud to flash around your wrist.
U.S president Barack Obama wears a Jorg Gray wristwatch that he received as a gift from the secret service on his 47th birthday. This model is styled after traditional aviator watches with a 60-minute chronograph quartz movement, anti reflective coating, and black leather band. Obama is no stranger to style and he has proudly worn this watch publicly on several occasions.
How to wear your watch? The great thing about this type of technical watch as an accessory is that it can be very versatile. As pointed out in some of the examples above it can be dressed up with a business suit and even worn around town or while working out in a tracksuit. The casual, preppy nautical look is also a big hit this spring/summer season in men’s fashion. Try a striped polo or tee with a fitted pair of cargo pants and a light blazer over top.
Alternatively, you can take a note from LeBron James and sport the safari militant look, which has become a popular pick this season as well. Of course, these styles depend on your own personal preference and if you pick the right watch it will look great any way you wear it.
