Blazing a Fashionable Trail with Men’s Blazers

With summer already upon us, there are only two months left to enjoy all the fashion trends for this season. One of the hottest looks for summer is the blazer. A classic wardrobe piece, the blazer can work in warm weather so long as you select a lightweight, unlined design.

With an eye towards fashion, check out the coolest ways to wear this staple piece – and how to avoid looking bad in one.

The blazer’s most important feature is its fit. If it is ill-fitting, people will notice that more than your style. When selecting a blazer, ensure that when you stretch your arms out straight, the sleeves do not become a three-quarter look: they must remain near your wrists.

The other important aspect is the fit in the shoulders: if your sleeve’s seam reaches below your shoulder, the blazer is too large. Ensure the seam rests on top of your shoulders, but make sure you still have room to move.

Once you’ve selected the perfect size of blazer, it’s time to pick your favourite trend.

This past June in Milan, Toronto-based fashion house DSquared2, had a runway show that demonstrated some unique ways to use a blazer for summer. One look (shown above) paired a camo-green blazer with demolished denim shorts, light button-down and cool accessories – like the hipster glasses and funky orange lace-up boots.

This casual look is perfect for hanging out on a patio with your friends, or even hitting up a concert. Move this look from day to night by changing into a pair of white denim jeans and adding some different accessories.

Dean and Dan Caten also showcased a great day-time office look with an evergreen hued blazer, blue fitted trousers and a funky orange strappy sandal. This is a great look for summer office-wear – it’s professional in its fit (the tuxedo-style button-down really dresses it up) but remains cool and stylish at the same time thanks to the unique colour palette. Make it casual by rolling up the sleeves of the blazer, unbuttoning the shirt a bit more and cuffing the bottom of the trouser.

Also in June, in Paris, Dior Homme had their summer runway show and also trended the men’s blazer.

While Dior Homme reconfigured what a suit should be for a man with this collection, creating a classic black/white/tan/navy palette and shapes reminiscent of Amish country, some of the blazers still hit the bulls-eye.

One completely fashion forward look redefines what a blazer should look like by creating a neckline closure rather than a simplistic button-down front, an asymmetrical flap-front open and a Nehru-inspired collar. This radical blazer look is for fashion risk-takers only – not every man can look confident and sexy in an experimental jacket.

Instead of pairing this unique blazer with same-coloured pants and shirt as Dior Homme did, try wearing it with a slate straight trouser, yellow boots and a muted shirt. This interesting blazer would be great for professional daywear if mixed with a business shirt, trouser and shoe; but can also work for nightwear if paired with a funky short, and interesting accessories. But no matter how you decide to style it, the Dior Homme asymmetrical blazer is sure to turn heads and get you some attention.

DSquared2 and Dior Homme are two great men’s fashion houses, but not everybody can afford their elite stylings. To get the look for yourself – without a designer price tag – check out H&M for their fitted white blazer or check out Zara International for their extensive blazer collection.

A great bet from Zara would be the unlined linen blazer – a summer staple textile thanks to its lightweight, breezy feel.
