Fall Sweaters Are Here

Leave your hoodies at home, because there are some great upcoming sweater styles that can be dressy or worn casually with a stylish edge.

Layering is key this season. with an assortment of thinner knits worn over collared shirts and under tweed jackets or camel coats. The neo prep trend has made the shirt, tie/sweater combination a staple for casual, everyday-wear. Match it with a narrow, belted pant, bright sneakers or loafers—this has become the go-to look of the season.

Colour is important, too. This season, if the sweater doesn’t come with colour, it’s a turtleneck.

Some looks to watch out for—

Casual Graphic Crew Necks:

These fall at waist length to show off your belt and can be worn over top of a collared shirt (with tie or popped collar) or by itself. Add a fitted tweed sports coat for an additional layer, your favourite toque, mitts, sneakers or hiking boots and you’re ready for the nippy fall weather.

The nautical look, with a horizontal chest stripe, was common this summer and remains common this season for the preppy collegiate look. This time, however, the stripes are much thicker and so is the fabric.

Find a great soft knit crew neck in bold colours. Once again, it can be worn over a collared shirt, under a sports coat or on its own. Sweaters can be worn with a great skinny pant, showing off your belt. A bright pant and sneakers can also make for a more fun and casual look.

These turtlenecks are in fashion, in jewel tones and greys, worn underneath a tailored sports jacket or a long wool camel coat. If you’re daring you can wear this with a pair of velvet pants like in the photo by Cavalli. Believe it or not, velvet has also made a comeback this season.

Thicker cable turtlenecks are also a trend. These ones are bulky enough to wear on their own and will keep you snug and comfy for those cold winter months. Try a bright orange or blue worn with a narrow, belted khaki pant.

Collegiate inspired Cardigans:

These cardigans remind me of the sweater version of a varsity jacket. Wear it over a shirt and tie, a smartly belted pair of khakis, and you will look straight off the Ivy League college campus.

What are you waiting for? Stores are already stocked full of these goodies. Look through your closets or go out and buy some of these basic sweater staples to keep you looking sharp this season.
