Going For The Droids

‘Tis the season for new smart phones! And boy, are there a lot out there to choose from.

You could always go the easy route and pick up the latest Blackberry or the new iPhone 4S, or you can choose to go into the ever-growing market of Android phones.

These days, there are many major competitors in the Droid smart phone market: HTC, Sony, Samsung, Motorola, Nokia, and, of course, Google (Yes, Google found a way to make even more money, if that’s possible). So the question is: which Android phone should you pick up this holiday season? We take a look at some of the ‘in’ phones on the market.

Samsung has always been a pioneer when it comes to technology. Their TVs and Blu-Ray players are beautifully designed and their fridges…well, they keep things cold. So it isn’t a surprise to see them at the front of the smart phone market. The new Galaxy SII smart phone builds upon its predecessor’s foundations and enhances them in many ways.

The AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen allows for a much more vivid viewing experience. This makes it an ideal phone for the avid film watcher and video game player. It features two cameras: an 8 megapixel on the back with dual LED flash function, and a 2 megapixel on the front for video calling. Samsung has also introduced a new user interface that allows for more customization options for the home screens, making the phone unique for each user. Overall the Galaxy SII is a great choice of Android phones and it comes in white or black!

Other than the Galaxy SII, there are plenty of other selections in the smart phone market. HTC has always been a proprietor of touch phone technology and is always coming out with something new. The HTC Sensation shares a few similarities with the Galaxy SII, both sharing the same size screen and camera specs, but also has major differences.

Although both share the same size screen, they use different technologies. The Sensation’s screen is made of a qHD LCD display, which allows it to have better resolution than the Galaxy SII, but also narrows the viewing range, making the screen less vivid if not viewed at the right angle. The hardware itself is a little larger and heavier then the Samsung, but is made out of a combination of Aluminum and Plastic, which makes it a bit more sturdy for those of us that tend to be a little reckless with our phones.

With a customizable user interface, and an app for downloading movies straight to the phone, the HTC Sensation is a sensible choice for those who want to keep it simple, but still stay up to date with the new phones on the market.

Finally, there is the Motorola Droid Razr, which was just recently released into stores this month. What sets the Razr apart is its sleek, elegant design. For those looking for style over function, the Droid Razr is unmatched. It is the thinnest smart phone on the market, measuring at 7.1mm at its thinnest point, and is also made with a Kevlar back plate (the same stuff they use in bullet proof vests), which makes it extremely durable.

Like the Sensation, the screen is made with Gorilla Glass, making it scratch resistant. The apps and user interface are the same as most Android phones and it is packed with the technological specs that are to be expected in the smart phone market today.

Whichever smart phone you decide to pick up this season, make sure it has what you are looking for. All of the above phones have a 16 GB memory, so storage is not going to be a deciding factor.

You’ll need to know which features are important to you so you can find a phone that offers them. Whether you’re inclined for a phone that is functional, or something that will look great, or a blend of both style and performance, there’ll be a phone for you.
