With the latest battle of the formerly betrothed between Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries quickly turning ugly, we take a look at the 4 messiest, most disastrous divorces in the NBA.
1) Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries
News of the crumbling 72 day marriage between Kim and Kris had been on every tabloid cover the world over. Speculation that the entire liaison had been fake, done strictly to gain fame, and not to mention a ton of money (the pair were said to have made a cool $18 million from their nuptials), has led to heated confrontations between the two families.
From siblings taking shots at each other on Twitter to harsh accusations of Humphries only being in it to leech off the Kardashian superstars, this is one break-up that is sure to get a whole lot nastier before it fades away.
2) Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman
A quickie Vegas ceremony never creates a solid foundation for a long-lasting marriage, especially when large amount of alcohol, an NBA rebel and a fame-seeking starlet are involved. We’re of course talking about the infamous nuptials of Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, unless you’re one of the most popular figures of the NBA. The trouble-ridden player, who would enter rehab more than once in the years following the union, ultimately filed for an annulment from Electra a mere 9 days after their early morning Vegas fiasco.
It was a smart move on Rodman’s part, as his star power was ten-fold of what Electra’s was at the time. The two remained an item, however, for the five months it took the courts to process the annulment, and the couple lived up to their wacky image in appearance and behavior. (Including domestic disturbance arrests in 1999.)
3) Shaquille and Shaunie O’Neal
Together for much longer than our first two couples, Shaq and his ex-wife Shaunie spent 7 years of bliss and had 4 children before he filed for divorce in 2007. After a brief reconcilement, the couple decided divorce was their ultimate choice, with Shaunie filing in 2009, citing the good old standby irreconcilable differences.
With Mrs. O’Neal doing so just days after moving herself and their kids from Florida to California, where marriage laws dictate half of all assets are split, onlookers couldn’t help but wonder if the move was strictly business motivated.
However, the duo recently reached a settlement, and although numbers were not made public, it was announced that the divorce would be handled by Florida courts and not in California. Better luck next time, Shaunie!
4) Michael Jordan and Juanita Vanoy
The priciest of all NBA divorces belongs to that of it’s biggest star: Michael Jordan. The baller superstar and his ex-wife Juanita filed for divorce in 2006 after 18 years of marriage and 3 children together. It was known at the time as not just the most expensive athlete divorce, but the most expensive celebrity divorce period.
The ex-Mrs. Jordan was said to have received a settlement in excess of $150 million as reported by Forbes Magazine. We’re sure that a lump like that didn’t take away all the pain of knowing about Jordan’s reported liaisons with other women, but it sure as heck would help!
5) Eva Longoria and Tony Parker
What seemed like a whirlwind fairytale courtship and wedding ended with a nasty break-up between the television star and the NBA player.
Married in a picturesque ceremony in a European castle, the union lasted just 3 years before Longoria filed for divorce in 2010. While she cited irreconcilable differences, there were multiple reports of Parker’s supposed infidelities with several women.
Thanks to a prenuptial agreement (all engaged celebs, take note!) the financial dividing of the marriage were relatively hassle-free. Emotionally, however, we doubt these two will be friendly exes any time soon. While Longoria is now happily dating Penelope Cruz’s brother Eduardo, there was a time when she couldn’t talk about the divorce without crying.
