Men don’t have it easy this year. Already overwhelmed by the endless list of must-haves on any fashion blog, it’s easy for the fashion forward male to start over-purchasing. In a surprise twist, accessories are ruling the roost for spring 2012 essentials. You may not have to revamp the core of your wardrobe, after all.
It’s easy to splurge the afternoon away at Holt Renfrew, but instead, try keying in on individual accessories to highlight the wardrobe you already have.
A few stand-out pieces are already begging for attention and will very likely receive it. What’s a fashion-forward man to look for in a spring investment piece? Which accessories will define your style when the snow thaws? Here are the three choice accessories that will carry you through spring and summer 2012:
- White-soled shoes. Many of you already own Sperrys, but this season’s shoe is a whole new breed. Think less “boat shoe” and more “light-weight boot”. My personal favourite is the Fitzsimmons by Native Shoes. Pair them with your favourite chinos and a crisp white tee. These will definitely be your go-to shoes for spring 2012.

- Statement socks. A long-time favourite for designers like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, a pair of bright, decorative socks will add a slice of personality to any spring outfit. Pinks, oranges and pastels are especially popular for spring 2012. Cuff your pants and allow those beauties to peak out.

- Pastel cardigans. Finally, the burliest man and the most ambitious fashion-lover can pull off this indulgent look. Who doesn’t feel bright and happy in a pastel cardigan? Go bold by pairing your cardigan with contrasting pastel bottoms or play it safe with your favourite denim. (Image credit: )
Whether or not you opt in for these must-have accessories, there are a few notes to keep for any spring 2012 purchase. Bold is in. If it’s a wacky pattern or an off-beat statement piece, chances are you’re nailing it. The 2012 SS season is a time to take advantage of the fun side of fashion. While some designers stuck with classic creams and greys, the majority brought back silk scarves, paisley sweaters and everything in between. If there has ever been a season to have fun with men’s fashion, it’s SS 2012.
