Dress Like A Gentleman

Adam Gallagher is the stylist and blogger behind I AM GALLA. His unique sense of style combines trends, high fashion and everyday guy wear, making accessible looks fashion-forward.

What makes Adam’s style so desirable? It’s diverse and comfortable. He plays with his style but never sacrifices his comfort, resulting in a blog archive of totally accessible outfit choices.

Chic influences and a love of well-tailored clothing puts Adam in our well-dressed gentleman books. Even though you’ll be able to build most of these looks without breaking the bank, his combination of colours and textures will make you feel simultaneously masculine and fabulous. Who could ask for more?

Take a look at a few of Adam’s most popular looks, deconstructed for the fashion-savvy reader.

The only thing I love more than the bow tie? His use of affordable pieces. You’ll need the basics: a crisp dress shirt with Sperry loafers and chinos. Then add a light, patterned bowtie and a leather laptop bag.

If you want your look to pop, go for a coloured chino and a bowtie in similar shades. Keep the dress shirt white if you want the look to stay versatile and gentlemanly.

If you’re on the adventurous side, take Adam’s advice: “You should push your boundaries, try new things, and be open minded.” Play with your look and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the response from others and the way you feel.

If you want to dress this up for a wedding or evening event, switch to a darker dress shirt and a heavier-patterned tie. Don’t know how to tie your bow? YouTube that

This subtly nautical look is one of my favourites. You’ll need some of the basics to pull off this look: your favourite neutral tee and contrasting skinnies, paired with a suede or leather dress shoe. Adam went for camel on grey, but cream on navy would work well, too.

The not-so-basics? Adam pairs his navy, nautically inspired overcoat with a beautiful leather work bag. You can get creative here. If you want to keep it nautical, go for a coat in a navy tone, or get creative with a striped pattern or a punch of red.

I absolutely love Adam’s ability to effortlessly accessorize. He pairs the sailor’s overcoat with a heavy, nautical necklace and a pair of ultra current shades. Again, get creative. Most bead stores sell a ton of charms that you can slide onto any chain necklace you already own.

This look is blended using affordable pieces, such as his American Apparel shirt, Topman satchel and Zara boots.

This look screams skateboarding gentleman – if that’s such a thing – or probably just Kanye West. For the office, take off the cap and put it in your work bag. For play time, throw it back on.

The leather jacket, shoes and skinny tie make this look chic and rough all at once. The leathers give this a casual feel, while the tie and dress shirt make it office-appropriate. You can pull this off with brown leathers, too, but opt for a cream or white dress shirt and a pair of blue jeans or chinos in that case.

Why is this look so popular on Adam’s blog? It’s oh-so-accessible. Most of us have these pieces already stocked in our wardrobes, and it’s easy to take this look to almost any event.

As per Adam’s signature, this look blends high-end pieces with affordable fashions. His Viparo leather jacket carries a heavier price tag than his Zara tie or American Apparel shirt. You don’t need to go designer to get a nice jacket, though. Take a look at Zara’s online selection.

Adam is well-known for his love of colour-popping. This look is the perfect way to try it yourself and, because of the neutral accessories, you can choose almost any colour for your trousers.

This season, corals, neons and oranges are the go-to choices for the fashion forward crowd. Try a few pairs in different colours to see what you’re most comfortable wearing and which colours really suit your complexion.

Although this look might be okay for a casual Friday, it isn’t office-appropriate for the rest of the week. Save this for a night out or a Saturday with friends.

Suede or leather dress shoes will make your matte pants pop and big, personalized accessories will let you tailor this look to your personal style.

The over-sized scarf is one of my favourite aspects of this look, but you can always leave it behind along with the hat when the weather heats up. Pair the coloured trousers with a white tee and your favourite jacket. The jacket can be leather, canvas, cotton or a combination of the three. Just make sure you’re keeping the accessories neutral.

Since coloured trousers are so in at the moment, you can find them almost anywhere. Adam opted for a high-end pair from Lamb and Flag. He also went with some of his favourite staple pieces like the Zara boots, Ray Ban glasses and American Apparel beanie.

Here’s a fun way to play with one of the season’s hottest trends: neon. Adam’s hot mustard knit adds an ultra current vibe to his otherwise classic gentleman’s ensemble.
This is a great transitional piece from office to evening. Wear your favourite basics: a well-structured dress pant and a pressed white dress shirt. Then shop around for a fabulous neon that you feel comfortable wearing. Again, Zara has an awesome selection

As for the trench, Adam opted for a high-end piece by Tiger of Sweden. Generally, you can get away with a less expensive coat as long as it’s properly fitted and regularly ironed.

To get this look down-pat, finish it off with your favourite pair of trendy sunglasses. Just like the other basics, affordable sunglasses can be found at Zara, H&M or Top Man.
