The Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Writing about Mother’s Day gifts always presents a unique challenge. As a rule, moms are all different, and have wildly diverse interests. The temptation in these kinds of articles is to go overly general and rap with you guys about gifts so vaguely pleasant that you could give it to the homeless guy at the end of the street and even he’d thank you for a great Mother’s Day present. And then put it away in the cupboard to collect dust. You know what I’m talking about.

Going straight into the cupboard.

So let’s go the other route instead. We’ll talk about gifts that are so awesome, your mom will love them, because they’re awesome and she’s awesome. We’ll call it the perfect storm of gifts.

THE PERFECT STORM OF GIFTS

The criteria for a great Mother’s Day gift has three parts: PRACTICALITY, because moms are, by necessity, practical ladies, PRETTINESS, because pretty things are pleasant to own, and PERSONABILITY, because everybody’s different. These three are the perfect storm of mother’s day gifts.

So put that stained glass cat statuette back onto the shelf. It might be beautiful, and your mom might love cats, but it’s not very practical. Same with that wine caddy.

So, with that in mind, it’s time to look at the perfect gifts.

THE PERFECT GIFT FOR HER PHONE, iPOD, AND LAPTOP

These days, everyone and their mom has an iPad or iPod (or their non-Apple equivalents), and they could all use some designer cases.

A leather case keeps an iPad or laptop protected and looks stunning when out at a cafe, at home on a coffee table, or peeking out of a bag.

Your mom might have quirkier tastes, though, and a leather sleeve might be too classic and conservative. That’s okay, too. Toss that leather out the window and stride into the world of amazing designer iPod cases.

These cases come in extraordinary designs, and none cooler than the ones with carved bamboo casing, which transforms the iPhone into an old wood-cased camera.

These hand-carved bamboos cases can get even more extraordinary, with the ability to etch full artistic designs into the wooden cases.

And since your mom probably carries her phone everywhere, this gift is going to get a lot of use. Can you say the same for that dolphin figurine?

THE PERFECT GIFT FOR HER WRIST

Nothing hits the holy trinity of practicality, prettiness and personability like watches. Watches combine a bracelet aesthetic with practical use, making it a gift a classy lady can take anywhere.

A conservative stainless steel watch with a silver band will do the job nicely, and looks spectacular in the watch box and on the wrist.

THE PERFECT GIFT FOR HER CAFFEINE ADDICTION

If you’re thinking of getting her a home espresso maker, than pat yourself on the back—that’s an awesome idea.

The advantage of a home espresso maker is two-fold: It saves her money (no more dropping five dollars a pop on a latte every day at Starbucks) and it makes much better espresso than the giant superautomatics in places like Tim Hortons and McDonalds.

Starbucks, Timmys, and McDonalds often fire boiling water through their tampers, resulting in bitter, cooked espresso. That’s solved with a little semiautomatic like a Gaggia machine, which perches on a kitchen counter with a sleek, graceful design. And if your mom is the type to really get into coffee, you could think about dropping the cash to get her a stainless steel manual machine, like a Rancilio Silvia, which takes a bit of learning, but can deliver the best espresso of your life.

THE PERFECT GIFT FOR HER BOOKSHELF

Some technologies make you wonder how we ever did without them. E-readers are kind of like that—book-sized devices that can hold thousands of books in .epub and .mobi format. They display pages in electronic ink—a LCD-like technology that mimics the look of ink on paper, which drastically reduces eye strain. E-readers make travelling a cinch—no more lugging out piles of books. You’ve got your library consolidated, and with thousands of classics available in public domain, you’re laughing.

AND FINALLY THE PERFECT MAINSTAYS

Flowers and chocolate are never a bad idea*.

(*Does not apply if allergies are involved)

They may not be practical, but Mother’s Day is a time for Mom to kick back and celebrate motherhood. Flowers and chocolate are our society’s go-to gifts, and there’s a reason for that. Flowers are fragrant and beautiful, and chocolate tastes amazing. And there’s no reason you shouldn’t get creative with it.

Pick flowers that work with the colour scheme she has in her home, for extra impact. Make them exotic, or get her potted plants, so that they’ll last longer. Match it with a fitting box of chocolates.

And of course, for the final touch, take her out to her favourite restaurant.

After all, she deserves it.
