Just in time for spring, the highly anticipated album The 20/20 Experience, by everyone’s favourite prince of pop, Justin Timberlake, is set to drop March 19th. The first single is the smooth, R&B inspired song entitled “Suit and Tie” featuring Jay-Z. “Suit and Tie” entered the Billboard top pop songs chart at a record breaking number 14; this is the highest a single has ever debuted to date. His entrance back into the music scene proves to be well worth the wait as Timberlake regains his rightful place, dominating the air waves!
“Suit and Tie” is a welcomed musical detour from the usual top 40 dance tracks that JT is known for. Directed by David Fincher, who also worked with Timberlake while directing The Social Network in 2010, the video features Justin head to toe in his finest Tom Ford duds. Given the title of the song, and that Mr. Timberlake looks damn fine in a suit and tie, I thought it would be fitting to take a closer look at his latest video and make note of the fabulousness that is Tom Ford fashion. One can argue that this video is nothing more than a 5 minute Tom Ford clothing ad, but for those of us who enjoy fine fashion, we can hardly complain.
Inspired by the release of his highly anticipated 3rd studio album, Justin Timberlake is incorporating his love of fashion and music in a way he’s never done before. Timberlake teamed up with Tom Ford for the styling of the “Suit and Tie” music video and will also feature Ford’s clothing in the album artwork. Ford and Timberlake are also set to collaborate on future videos as well. As if that isn’t enough, Timberlake also plans to help Ford create a new line a suits inspired by The 20/20 Experience album! Ford, who is best known for reviving the house of Gucci, provided the classic black tuxedo Timberlake wore at his wedding to Jessica Biel this past October. As far as designer men’s wear is concerned, everything Mr. Ford touches turns to gold and I can say that without a doubt this new endeavor with JT will be no different.
From the first to last frame “Suit and Tie” is dripping with luxury goods. The first scene opens with Timberlake channeling 1920‘s elegance, all the while looking modern and chic. Wearing a fedora, aviator sunglasses and driving a vintage Pontiac GTO convertible, Timberlake looks to be a curly haired 007. From there we see JT grooming his beard and perfectly coifing his hair, showing the audience just how he manages to pull off his perfect suit and tie look. While he is in the process of suiting up, the film pans over his selection of ties, leather driving gloves and sparkling cufflinks. As Timberlake is putting on his tie, he flashes the Tom Ford label to the camera as a nod to the designer and as a shot of shameless advertising. Jay-Z even provides a shout out to the Ford himself, as well as other designers, when he raps “This is trouble season. Tom Ford tuxedos for no reason. All Saints for my angel. Alexander Wang, too.”
“Suit and Tie” shows a mature side to Timberlake and it is apparent he has grown from the pop star that brought us Sexy Back; especially with the featured fine cigars and whisky in crystal tumblers. Since Justin Timberlake is considered one of greatest fashion icons of his generation, there is hope that his new found love of the classic tuxedo look will influence the male population in general to perhaps revisit an era of effortless sophistication and class.
“Suit and Tie” has set the stage for what will surely be one of the most innovative collaborations the music and fashion worlds have ever seen. With the album having yet to be released, this first taste of The 20/20 Experience has already left fashion and JT lovers begging for more!
