Leather Weather

The fashion world has fallen in love with leather yet again over the past few seasons. Leather sweatpants, crewnecks, teeshirts, snapbacks and even gym shorts are being given the all leather (and occasionally pleather) treatment. The trend’s exploded over the past six months with all kinds of brands offering their spin on leather garments. Leather pieces, especially in black, are popping up on the runways of Paris, the streetwear tradeshows in Las Vegas and in every music video imaginable. If you want further evidence that leather is the latest textile of choice, check out the 2013 All-Star game in Houston, when players, performers and fans all came in their leather best, despite humid Houston not being the ideal setting for wearing the pelt.
Leather details were all over NBA players, especially at All-Star Saturday night. LeBron James sported a custom leather sleeve crenwneck emblazoned with his Nike Sportswear Line lion logo. His stylist, Rachel Johnson, modified the sweater to keep up with the trend – although the sleeve were a touch short. He paired the sweater with black leather pants with an elasticized cuff and big pair of dark sunglasses.

Fellow Miami Heat All-Star and undisputed fashion fan Dwyane Wade also opted for black leather, like James, and wore a pair of baggy leather pants paired with a black blazer, white and grey printed button up shirt, gold chains, and gold watch. The black, gold, white and grey color scheme was designed around his new gold Li-Ning Way of Wade sneakers, that shone courtside. All-Star was all about the launch of his new shoes, so Wade was clearly dressing around his sneakers all weekend.

Chris Paul decided to go monotone, wearing a black blazer with leather shoulder panels, that was cut just right for his relatively small frame. He finished off the look black pants, a black sweater with a leather panel along the collarbone and black Jordans with neon highlights. The result was an outfit that was flattering but still fun for the point guard to wear. His Clippers’ teammate Blake Griffin, also took part in the black leather trend, wearing a well-fitting flap jacket that fit him beautifully, and a gold watch. It was nice to see players opting for leather in different ways, not just pants.
The celebrities at NBA All-Star were also out in full force embracing leather. For the dunk contest, Toronto own’s Drake sat courtside in a pair of red leather sweatpants, that were the exact same shade of red as the Canadian flag. He wore them sagging down with a black tee and his platinum OVO chains. Jay-Z wore a custom black leather Brooklyn Nets leather snapback but his queen, and Houston native, Beyonce, opted to forgo the leather trend this time around and try prints instead. The other hot hip hop couple of Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz made up for Jay and Bey’s lack of leather. Keys performed during the NBA All-Star half-time show, wearing a cropped jersey and leather sweater, black Reeboks designed by her husband, and a pair of black leather sweatpants that fit terribly. They were too tight in the thighs, too high in the raise and to big in the waist – proving that the leather sweatpant trend isn’t for everyone, even superstars.
Another performer that opted for leather, was 2Chainz. The rapper, and former college basketball player at Alabama State, came on-stage with band Fall Out Boy for an impromptu performance. 2Chainz wore an unreleased grey camouflage 2013 All-Star jersey, his signature two gold chains, black sunglasses, a black bandana tied snapback by Dope Couture, and of course, black leather sweatpants. When 2Chainz was off-stage, he also added a black leather jacket with fur trim, to complete the luxurious, all-black look.

Other attendees that opted for leather included John Legend singing a stirring rendition of the star spangled banner in a simple, black leather motorcycle jacket with black denim, a black t-shirt and black sneakers. Ne-Yo started off the festivities during the All-Star pre-show wearing a black motorcycle-style jacket, a white shirt and some very fitted leather pants. Finally, the fastest man in the world Usain Bolt, wore a black leather bomber jacket to complete an all-black ensemble. As soon you can see, Jay-Z’s “all black everything” mantra has seemingly been reinterpreted as “all black leather everything” lately, and if All-Star is any proof, the trend won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
