The Bare Necessities

Trends may come and go, but there are always a few foundational pieces in your closet that you can keep coming back to. These key pieces are the building blocks of your outfits, and they’re classic for a reason. They have withstood the test of time to remain the foundation of any outfit.

You may already have some of these pieces in your closet, you might not; but every great outfit is born from these fashion staples.

1: Tailored suit

A tailored suit is a must have, but a grey suit is a fresh take on a piece that every man should have in his wardrobe.

The key to ensuring your suit fits you well is in the cut. This means that your suit should hug at the shoulders, waist, and legs as opposed to just hanging off your body. Even though you may not wear a suit everyday, it’s good to keep this in your closet for events or formal functions. Remember, the better the fit, the better you look and feel.

2: The Trenchcoat

The trenchcoat is a timeless piece that every man should have in his closet. Perfect for those formal events or even those rainy days at the office, this is a wardrobe staple. Whether you choose the classic khaki colour or decide to be a bit more suave with a black or navy one, you’ll always be in style with this jacket.

3: Fitted button-down shirt

While button-down shirts come in a variety of colours, I’d suggest going with a white one at first. White button-down shirts are the ultimate basic and transitory piece. They can be used casually and formally and can take you from work to date night. It’s best to invest in a fitted button-down shirt because it never goes out of style. Keep in mind the key word here: “fitted”. Much like the tailored suit, your button-down shirt should fit you like a glove.

If you have yet to own a button-down shirt, start with white and once you feel comfortable, bring in a few neutral colours that can also be dressed up and dressed down.

4: Khaki Pants

Khaki pants usually make their appearance most frequently during the warmer months. A great alternative to its darker denim cousin, khakis work well for casual Fridays at the office or even on those cooler summer nights. Whether they’re worn with sandals, sneakers or even dressed up a bit, khakis show us that denim is not always the final answer.

5: A leather jacket

This is a necessary accessory in your fashion arsenal. It’s a great layering piece that never goes out of style. The leather jacket is like that badass cousin of the trench coat. Leather jackets (no matter what style) give your outfit a bit of an edge and let’s face it: most women can’t resist a bad boy—or at least someone who looks the part.

6: Straight-leg dark denim

Straight-leg dark denim goes with everything. Dressed up or dressed down, they looks damn good. The key with choosing the right pair for yourself is to make sure it fits you well. In all honesty, fit can really make or break an outfit so make sure that the cut of it fits you in all the right places. Dark denim can be used in any situation and is the easiest thing to create an outfit around. Whether you pair it with dress shoes, sneakers, or even sandals it’s something you want to invest it.

7: The Grey Sweatshirt

There’s something to be said about a man that can look so effortlessly stylish. Case in point: the grey sweatshirt –no logo. The plain sweatshirt works well in any situation. It’s the grown-up alternative to a cheesy graphic –tee. Again, the neutral sweatshirt goes with just about anything –and we all appreciate transitory pieces don’t we?

8: A Watch

A classic and very necessary accessory that every man must have is a watch. Not only is it functional, it is a timeless piece that carries over season after season.

Although smartphones are currently taking over the purpose of a watch, watches can compliment an outfit and take your look up a notch.

If you’re not much of a watch person I’d suggest staying away from the trendier looking timepieces and investing in a classic one. The timeless design of the more traditional watches carries on throughout the years and saves you the headache of trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Each of these pieces is a great starting point for your closet. Whether you’re adding to your closet or rebuilding your wardrobe, these pieces are the foundation for any outfit. Just remember to make sure you choose styles that fit your body type and personal style. At the end of the day these are the bare necessities for which to build your entire style around.
