Jay-Z is many things to many people, but to the stylish denizens of North America, he’s now also the guy who’s raising the bar on high fashion. Not only is his new capsule collection in collaboration with Barneys New York made up of some stunning articles from some of the biggest names in the business (he is Shawn Carter, after all), the prcies of the luxury streetwear pieces go all the way up to an insane $58,000 for a jacket from Rick Owens.
But there’s more to those price tags than whole a lot of zeroes. Before the line dropped, 25 per cent of Barneys’ proceeds were slated to benefit the Shawn Carter Foundation, Jay-Z’s charitable organization. However, following incidents of alleged racial profiling at the luxury retailer as well as at Macy’s, the donations were upped to a whopping 100 per cent of the sales. Not bad. Here are our favourite picks from his carefully-curated collection, brought to you by often-the-moment designers such as Moncler, Balmain, En Noir, Just Don and more.
Mixed Exotics Brooklyn Cap
This nappa leather Just Don cap features an adjustable python strap with gold-tone buckle and, of course, lets all the world know where you stand on the brewing rivalry between New York’s greatest burroughs. The brim measures in at a sporty 2.75 inches—complete with impeccable scale texturing. Just Don uses stars and the ‘A New York Holiday’ line logo on the crown to break up the classy matte-black, tone-on-tone colour scheme, proving once again that you don’t need bright colours to turn heads ($875, Barneys).
Lanvin Slim-Fit Two-Button Jacket
The quintessential black blazer came back from Italy with luxury details. Slim with two-button construction, it hits on all the right aspects of today’s grade-A suiting. Beyond that, however, light shoulder padding gives it a slightly deconstructed look, and leather-coated zip pockets add a pop of urban cool to the traditional design that indeed goes perfect with a pair of equally tailored denim. As far as night-out jackets go, this is as cool as they get ($2,495, Barneys).
Barneys New York NYC NYC Tee
Thankfully, Carter threw in at least one piece that’s easier on the wallet than the rest of his outrageously stylish collection, and it’s something that every guy can get behind. Dual gold acronyms cross at the chest of this cotton, limited edition T-shirt, while three acronyms—BNY, NYC and SCC—back it up on the reverse panel. Worn with a black button-up cardigan or simply a black blazer, you can’t go wrong ($70, Barneys).
Hublot 18k Gold Shawn Carter 45mm Classic Fusion
If you’re serious about giving to charity, put your money where your wrist is—especially if it’s a watch from Hublot, which is the kind of piece you’ll be handing down to your kid’s kids. Coming in at a large 45mm, the Classic Fusion prominently displays the Shawn Carter crest as a cut-away open dial, revealing the movements within. Despite how it may appear, this timepiece shows off a minimalist aesthetic, with no complications other than a half-moon seconds hand in the lower left, and bold hands and markers. An alligator leather strap adds a final dash of class ($33,900, Barneys).
Rick Owens Leather Cutwork Fleece Hoodie
The mighty Rick Owens comes out with this superbly soft cotton fleece hoodie, incorporating leather details for the ultimate luxury sweatshirt—you know, for after those tough practices on the court. The front zipper draws all the way through to the end of the leather-trimmed hood, and it includes all the traditional designs such as kangaroo pockets and rib-knit cuffs ($1,275, Barneys).
For the rest of the collaboration, check out the special section on Barneys’ website. Supplies, as they say, will only stick around for a New York minute.
