Honouring NBA Style Legend Craig Sager

Craig Sager, the TNT sideline reporter whose colourful range of suits has captured the attention of fans for years, will have to sit out this year’s playoffs for medical reasons. Sager was recently diagnosed with acute leukemia, and will spend at least the next four weeks getting treatment. To honour their friend’s struggle, the TNT crew and his son, Craig Sager Jr., donned “special Craig Sager throwback uniforms”—outfits rife with Sager-esque cranberry, powder blue and checks. Here are some of the most memorable outfits from the guy who taught us the true meaning of being self-assured in your personal style.

The All-Star of style
Bold primary colours dominate this epic outfit Sager wore during the 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend. Despite its loudness, you can stand to learn a thing or two from how Sager uses varying shades of red to create depth and layering. Oh, and don’t let that bit of break at the ankles fool you. Every piece of Sager’s wardrobe is tailored. If you check out his outfit during the Rising Stars Challenge, you’ll also notice how he mixes and matches several of the same pieces of a wild American take on sprezzatura.

The checkered sport jacket
There are few items in Sager’s wardrobe that prompt him to tone down the rest of his outfit, and this checkered blazer is one of them. With such a crazy statement piece, Sager resorts to a simple pair of khakis (bearing his trademark pleat), a white broadcloth and a simple pink tie. It’s a look not even his style rival Don Cherry has fully mastered.

The Armani suit
Nothing says Sager quite like an Armani suit. This 2001 outfit marks one of the rare moments the announcer stepped away from bold colours—not it lacks any, well, flash. Sager had this black reflective silk suit custom-made for himself. During the broadcast, producers felt the fabric was too distracting and asked him to change halfway through the segment.

Giving it some texture
Sager may be known for his creative use of colour, but he also really shines when it comes to playing with textures. Here, he’s seen chatting with Benny the Bull wearing a suit that appears to be made of textured cotton. His tie complements its tighter pattern with a bold wavy design, as well as Benny’s own duds.

More flash than Swaggy P
Nick Young may be Tinsel Town’s swaggiest NBA player—having a spot in GQ and a regular presence in most every other style publication does that—but Sager’s the man who invented effortless, care-not style. Here, he gets into the theme of things at a 2009 Atlanta Hawks-Orlando Magic game, wearing a suit with a print reminiscent of bird feathers. Swaggy P’s Versace has nothing on it.
