Another Pitti Uomo has come and gone, and we’re the wiser for it. Florence’s vaunted menswear fair attracts the most stylish men in the world, all clamouring to check out the latest designers have to offer. Even Kanye got in on that action. Digging through streetwear photography for the event, we found five trends that can help you stay ahead of the curve this summer and beyond.
Blue on blue
Cobalt, indigo and navy—whatever your choice, make it a shade of blue. Outfits incorporating tonal matching are an excellent way to create a minimalistic look without sacrificing complexity. To make the look your own, play with several shades at once and layer them from dark to light, or light to dark, creating the illusion of depth. Likewise, you can throw in a pop of a lighter blue if you enjoy standing out.
Although Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley got the ball rolling early with his own attempts at stylish headwear, the gentlemen at Pitti Uomo have mastered the accessory. The last few years have seen the comeback of fedoras, but only those comfortable navigating that sartorial minefield have been brave enough to actually pull the short-brimmed hats off. Now, wide brims are officially on tap, perfect for keeping cool during a sunny day and capping off a tailored suit. The best part? You can hardly go wrong with these, as long as you pair more structured ones with more formal duds, and leave the softer brims for more casual T-shirts and jeans. Light earth tones and natural fabrics are a sure-fire combo for your warm-weather looks.
With rap and basketball’s streetwise culture playing a larger influence in the world of high fashion, its refreshing to see lengthy cuts embraced in a stylish way. Whether you’re sporting an oversized T-shirt or an extra-long coat, mix and match different lengths to create a contrasting layered effect. And just because one of your pieces is slouchy doesn’t give you a free pass to forget about fit—keep a key piece, such as a blazer or pants, proportioned as normal. That’s the fine line between stylish slacker and you tripping over your shirt hem.
Last fall’s stripe obsession makes a comeback, overtaking checks as Pitti Uomo’s suit pattern of choice. Tonal stripes are an easy, conservative favourite, but progress can be seen in wider chalkstripes and a retro throwback to shoulder-width lapels. For a younger, fresher take on the pinstripe, contrasting lines are great for livening up neutrals like brown and slate.
Although you may have ditched your blacks for the warmer weather, you might want to consider pushing your whites to the back of your wardrobe, too. Fresh and bold browns are an easy way to step out of the usual summer suiting palette of grey, white and navy. Chocolate brown, for example, definitely stands out paired with lighter blues and complements a bold orange tie as well. Some NBA players have already gotten on the bandwagon, including DeAndre Jordan and Chris Paul.
