Toronto Men’s Fashion Week (TOM) brought together the best of Canada’s burgeoning menswear scene, showcasing 21 emerging and established designers during its inaugural event Aug. 12-14. Hundreds descended upon the show to preview next year’s spring and summer menswear collections, with Sons of Odin, HD Homme and Christopher Bates making some of the biggest waves according to those mingling in the crowd at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel location.

Speaking of which, there was no shortage of stylish Torontonians on hand. The city’s international and metropolitan status was evident from the set of vibrant guests we met, each passionate about menswear and what TOM will mean for the city’s fashion scene. You see, Toronto doesn’t enjoy that cachet of New York or the traditions of Milan. However, now that the city has joined those cities in hosting the world’s eighth men’s fashion week (in addition to hosting the world’s first official
fashion incubator), it seems Toronto has stepped up its game on the international front.

And that’s a great thing. How men dress has also gone through a bit of a sea change over the last few years—that is, more men are interested in knowing how to do it right—and it’s becoming incredibly clear that Canadian men are helping lead the charge. The numbers back it up: according to NDP Group data sourced by the CBC, Canadian sales of men’s clothing shot up 30 per cent in the last year among guys 20-35. However, all it took us is one look at the swagger present at the party to tell us what we needed to know.
We’re calling it now: TOM will undeniably become one of North America’s top menswear destinations moving forward.
We were on hand at the shows to see the latest that the designers from Toronto, Canada and North America had to offer. Here are our top three runway shows, and what we had to say about each of them.
