The clothes make the man, but sometimes it’s better if the man makes his clothes. While it’s all too easy to find places online and off that will whip up a suit, shirt, or tie cut to your exact specifications, the guys that make something you can wear everyday are a bit harder to find. Here, we found brands that offer anything from workout gear to designer leather jackets, each sporting details you can tweak to suit your personality and needs.
Leather jackets: Leather Project X by BLK DNM
BLK DNM is a little side project of Johan Lindeberg (yes, that J. Lindeberg) with locations in New York and Stockholm. Part of that is Leather Project X, a place that lets you customize a leather jacket down to the panels and trim using an online app. The guys’ only choice is Leather Jacket 5, which is just fine once you dive into the seven colour groups and six panel choices. The designers will contact you to finalize any details before starting on your new investment piece.
The brainchild of Scott Morrison, this Lower Manhattan shop in New York offers denimheads custom and bespoke jeans available in more than 460 selvedge fabrics, including denim (duh), twill, chambray and corduroy. All you have to do is show up at the 3×1 store, where they’ll take your measurements and let you choose your style, from low-rise slim to athletic fit. They’ll pass the info to the in-house pattern maker, who will in turn send your specs to the on-site factory where you can literally see them being made behind glass.
Athletic wear: The Joinery by Lululemon
Lululemon has recently opened its brand-new Vancouver flagship store as sort of a proving ground for the company’s newest retail ideas. One of these includes wooing the male half of the population with its shop-within-a-shop concept, The Joinery. There, men are able to pick and choose the details of a custom pair of workout shorts, including what type of liner they’d like and the overall style, which sport inseams ranging from five to 11 inches. Then, the shorts are made on the spot in about 10-15 minutes. Right now, the shorts only come in black, but who’s complaining?
It’s a small detail, but having the perfect belt can go a long way. Beltcraft allows men choose a custom belt in leather, suede, or cotton as a starting point. From there, you can customize details including loop colour, cut, width and length, to name a few. Forget matching your shoes—just go with what you like.
Kicks: Niketown by Nike
The first is still the greatest. The Nike iD studio within the brand’s New York Niketown flagship store is one of the few places that you can create a custom Nike kick without logging onto their website. There’s a touch screen in the lobby that lets you figure things out yourself, but you can actually call ahead to set up a 45-minute appointment with a concierge who will help you pick out the perfect design. Once you’re done, you can purchase the shoes; either way, you’ll be given a plastic card printed with a picture of your iD creation on one side. If you’re in a hurry or just lacking inspiration, you can buy some of Nike’s favourite iD creations right off the shelf.
