Everything You Need To Know About Apple’s Watch Launch

Apple has finally announced the full details of its highly anticipated smartwatch at a keynote presentation Monday. The good news is that the Apple Watch will only be as expensive as you make it. The bad news? It can get pretty damn expensive. Thankfully, the tech giant has made good on many of the promises it made last fall when it first teased the device, meaning people will be paying top dollar for what seems to be top-shelf hardware. Below, find everything you need to know about getting your hands on the Apple Watch.

Three types
There will be three main collections: Sport Edition, Apple Watch and the oddly-named Watch Edition. All three are available in both 38- and 42-millimetre case sizes. The sport edition is the cheapest and comes with a simple rubber strap. The standard watch can be customized to feature either a stainless steel or aluminum case and one of several metal and leather bands. The wildly expensive Watch Edition features an 18-karat red or yellow gold case and a specially designed clasp.

How much it will cost
Price points range from the expectedly expensive to the downright ridiculous. The sport edition will cost $350 to $400, depending on the size. The standard model will set you back at least $550 for the basics. Fully customized, the Apple Watch can balloon to more than $1,000. If you’re lucky enough to score the high-end Watch Edition version—and we mean “lucky” very loosely, here—the piece of unproven, first-generation wearable tech will set you back a cool $10,000.

The watch will feature haptic feedback, apps, fitness tracking, customizable faces and a raft of new ways to communicate with other Apple Watch users. You’ll have to download iOS 8.2 to your phone to connect it with your watch. The device will last 18 hours of general use, meaning that it will have to be charged roughly once daily using the included magnetic charging cable. It will stop showing notifications when it’s not being worn to save juice, and should be capable of lasting around two or three days in standby mode.

When and where to get it

Pre-orders for the Apple Watch begin April 10 in the United States and Canada. All models will be begin to ship on April 24. However, the solid gold Watch Edition will be extremely exclusive. So far, all we know is that well-heeled Apple fans will be able to purchase them at “select retailers”—speculation has it that you’re most likely to see them only at Apple flagship stores in major cities, or maybe even jewellers.
