Sharp-shooting Guard Discussing Team-Friendly Extension with Warriors
The Splash Brothers could be together for the long term.
According to The Athletic, Warriors all-star Klay Thompson has been undergoing talks with the team regarding a contract extension. Thompson’s current contract expires after the 2018-2019 season. Should he sign a four-year extension, as has been discussed, Thompson could make up to $102 million over the course of the deal. However, if he elects to wait a year and enter free agency, the Warriors shooting guard could earn up to $139 million over the same period of time.
Thompson taking a team-friendly pay cut could hold significant benefit for the Warriors going forward. Most notably, it would free up more space for the team to retain superstar Kevin Durant. Durant’s contract has a player option for 2018-2019, before expiring after next season.
If Golden State wishes to keep their championship-winning core together, it is imperative that sacrifices such as Thompson’s potential extension be made.
