Sights and Sounds from the USA Basketball Minicamp
We are in the dog days of summer, a quiet time in the NBA world. However, a group of stars has gotten together to play some ball. I’m talking, of course, about the Team USA Minicamp in Las Vegas.
Normally, the Minicamp would be held in order to prepare American players for the World Championships (now the World Cup of Basketball). However, that tournament has been pushed back until 2019, to avoid being overshadowed by the FIFA World Cup. However, the camp is still going on, in an effort to establish camraderie and chemistry for the future.
The Minicamp will also act as a leadership transition, with Gregg Popovich at the helm for the first time, taking over from longtime Team USA leader Mike Kryzewski.
Some of the NBA’s biggest stars will take part in scrimmages, including Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kevin Durant and John Wall. Of those not present, perhaps the most notable absentee in Kawhi Leonard. Previously, Leonard was said to be considering participating, in an attempt to prove his health to potential suitors. However, now that he has been traded to Toronto, it appears that Kawhi has decided otherwise.
Here are some photos and highlights from the early stages of the camp:
Way back, before Lob City, these guys were teammates
Point guard discussion
Passing the torch
Isaiah has taken some hard knocks lately, both on and off the court, but he appears determined
Ditto for Deebo
Finally, here’s a rather dishevelled-looking John Wall. Make of this what you will, as the Twitter world already has.
