NBA Owners Looking to Have Access to Mental Health Records of Players
With how prevalent mental health is in today’s society, NBA owners have voiced the desire to own mental health records of all players in the League.
With public statements from Kevin Love, DeMar DeRozan, as well as other NBA athletes on the topic, aiding players with mental health has prompted NBA commissioner Adam Silver to action. The NBPA has recently hired Dr. William Parham as the League’s first director of mental health and wellness. Of course, this is just one of the steps the NBA will be taking in helping its players.
That being said with owners wanting mental health records of each player, that would eliminate any sort of confidentiality which should exist between players and their psychologists. Kevin Love himself voiced the need for confidentiality and its non-negotiable requirements.
Only time will tell us how this plays out, but the union is strongly set on confidentiality emphasizing player mental health over “investments” that NBA owners make off their athletes.
