Olynyk, Joseph, 4 Other NBA Stars to Play for Canada in Qualifiers
Cory Joseph and Kelly Olynyk are set to suit up for Canada yet again.
They will be joined by fellow NBA players Khem Birch, Justin Jackson, Dillon Brooks and Tristan Thompson, as Team Canada, led by head coach Roy Rana, are set to take on Brazil in next week’s FIBA World Cup qualifier. After going 5-1 ini the first round of qualifications, they will play Brazil on September 13 on home soil in Quebec.
“Always honoured to answer the call to represent my country in international competition and I’m looking forward to the journey with our family on the floor,” Rana, who is also the head coach of the Ryerson University Rams, said in a release.
Canada will also take on Chile and Venezuela.
“As the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas qualifiers continue, the program depth we’ve been building over the years will be crucial for the success of our team,” said Rowan Barrett, the assistant GM of the senior men’s program. “September’s games are an important step for Canada as we work towards our goal of qualifying for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.”
For the first time ever, 32 countries will play in the FIBA World Cup, which just happens to be the main qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Joel Anthony, Brady Heslip, and Melvin Ejim are other well known names on the Canadian roster.
