Shaquille O’Neal’s Son Medically Redshirted due to Heart Issue
The much anticipated collegiate debut of Shaquille O’Neal’s son, Shareef, will have to wait.
During a routine medical check up, it was discovered that Shareef is dealing with a serious heart condition which requires surgery. The doctors at UCLA believe that Shareef will be able to return to basketball activity, but he will be medically redshirted for his freshman year.
“The other day during a routine checkup we found a medical issue dealing with my heart,” O’Neal told TMZ Sports. “Thank God the UCLA medical staff found it early but I will not be playing this season and I will be a medical redshirt.”
The highly touted recruit will now focus all of his attention on getting back to full health and his studies with an eye of getting back onto the court next year.
“A lot of people are asking if it’s career ending. The answer is absolutely not,” he said. “It’s just a little bump in the road and I’ll be back in no time.”
