Expansion Put on Hold?

Expansion on Hold?

NBA Hoping to Expand to new Markets, But Unlikely Until 2025

A move to Seattle? Maybe a team in Las Vegas?

All of this will have to wait as some prospective ownership groups have been advised to play the long-term game as NBA officials do not believe expansion will happen until 2025 at the earliest. The year 2025 is an important one as it will coincide with when a new television deal will be under negotiations.

If the NBA plans to return to Seattle, KeyArena is currently under renovation and is expected to be complete by early 2021.

Assuming the NBA doesn’t go the path of expansion and decides to simply relocate a team, the Memphis Grizzlies seem like the most likely candidate, although a potential relocation would force Robert Pera to sell his stake in the team.

Either way, the NBA has other priorities in the meantime, but it seems very likely that Seattle is destined to return to the NBA eventually.
