Investing in NBA Future Bets

Betting on Futures in the NBA is a popular and entertaining form of wagering. Typically, it allows for relatively high, profitable odds and is a long-term investment into a team or player you see potential in backing. Based on current market options and odds, I will offer a few suggestions. Note: all odds will be from Bet365, but shop around with other sports books, if you wish.

  • Denver Nuggets to Win the Northwest Division (Odds: 2.10 / +110)

This is my favourite bet for a few different reasons. Midway through the season, the Nuggets hold a 3 and 4 game advantage over their primary Northwest Division foes, the Thunder and Trail Blazers, respectively. The fact that the Nuggets have managed to achieve a 29-13 record thus far, while missing Gary Harris, Will Barton and Paul Millsap for frequent periods, is incredible. As these players return, it should bolster the Nuggets squad and give them the depth they need for continued success. Nikola Jokic has been playing at an MVP level, and I don’t expect that to slow down. This team missed out on the playoffs in devastating fashion last year, losing in overtime on the final day. They are hungry! Also, the Thunder have the toughest remaining schedule of any team in the NBA and should experience a bit of a drop off in their play. At +110, you can basically double your money with an investment on the Nuggets.

  • Miami Heat to Win the Southeast Division (Odds: 2.37 / +137)

Here is another bet that I like quite a bit. Currently at 21-20 the Heat are ahead of the Hornets by 2.5 games, the Magic by 3 games and the Wizards by 4.5 games. Those are relatively comfortable leads, and considering that the Heat have played better as of late and got Dion Waiters back from injury, I expect that margin to grow. A lot of betting on Futures is based on speculation, and I believe that there is a good chance the Hornets and especially the Magic, will be sellers at the trade deadline, potentially looking to move Kemba Walker and Nikola Vucevic, respectively.

  • Toronto Raptors to Win the Eastern Conference (Reg. Season) (Odds 2.90/+1.90)

This is a slightly riskier bet but I still think there is value in backing it. The Raptors have obviously gotten off to a fantastic start, holding a 6.5 game lead over the Celtics and a 4.5 game lead over the 76ers. The concern is the Milwaukee Bucks who are only 1.5 games back and have been equally as impressive as the Raptors. They are a deep team and have an MVP candidate in Giannis. Working in the Raptors favour is the fact that they have the easiest remaining schedule in the NBA, though the Bucks have the 4theasiest schedule, as well. My slight concern is that Leonard and Lowry are rested frequently in the last few weeks of the season, which may open the door for the Bucks. At the same time, the Raptors know how important home court advantage is in the playoffs, and I expect that they will make a concerted effort to clinch 1stplace before resting guys.
