Gonzaga Upset in WCC Title Game, St. Mary’s Clinches Spot in the Dance
That tournament feeling is back!
March Madness is right around the corner, conference tournaments are out in full force and the season of upsets is off and running!
On Tuesday night, the first shock of March happened.
Gonzaga, one of the premier teams in college basketball were upset by St. Mary’s by a score of 60-47 in the WCC title game.
And what an upset it was.
An unstoppable Bulldogs team, winners of each of their past 21 games, averaging 90-points per game on the season, not scoring any fewer than 67 points at any point in the season managed only 47 points against St. Mary’s. St Mary’s, a team that lost to Gonzaga twice this season by a combined 62-point margin (94-46 and 69-55).
Over the span of their 21-game win streak, Gonzaga was blowing teams out by an average margin of 30 points. All-American standout Rui Hachimura has established himself as a force and a high lottery pick in the upcoming June Draft.
Yet, Gonzaga couldn’t solve St. Mary’s for a third time this season. Winners of the WCC title in each of the past five years were dismantled by 13 points by an early Cinderella team.
“We were told to pull off a miracle prior to today’s game by people who don’t know us,” Saint Mary’s Jordan Hunter said after the victory. “We didn’t just pull off a miracle, we knew when we were going into that game that we were going to win it.”
With the victory, not only do the Gaels hoist the WCC title, they also clinch a spot in the main dance, the National Tournament, which begins next week!
With conference tournaments underway all across the country and Selection Sunday slated for this weekend, the college basketball buzz is out in full force.
March Madness is here!
