The Face of the League?

Giannis Antetokounmpo Wants to Remain Himself

In the midst of an MVP-calibre season, Giannis Antetokounmpo is attracting quite a bit of attention, leading to many seeing him as the new face of the NBA. If that is indeed the case, Giannis has made it clear that he is not going to change his personality to fit into the American mainstream culture; and good for him.

“A lot of people say that I can be the face of the league. Lately, people have told me…the closest people you know my family, my girlfriend, my mom, my brothers, people say that I cannot be the face of the league because I’m not American, I don’t have the American culture in me.”

“I sat back and thought about that; should I have a little bit more American swag, should I come with a suit to the game, should I be more Americanized? But, man, if I can’t be the face of the league being me, I don’t want to be the face of the league. That’s pretty much it, “ said the “Greek Freak”.

It is an interesting thought, as the NBA has never really had an international player ascend to the level that Giannis. There have been great international players in the NBA, future hall-of-famers like Dirk Nowitzki and perennial all-stars Manu Ginobili and Pau Gasol, but none of them have ever been mentioned as potential “faces of the NBA”.

Credit to Giannis for staying true to himself and his identity. No player should have to change anything about themselves for the sake of appealing to the mass audiences. Also, above all else, Giannis’ game speaks for itself and that is the primary reason he is drawing so much attention.

Frankly, it is refreshing to see someone so comfortable in their own skin. The way I see it, Giannis’ views on this particular topic, will make him even more popular.
