Thunders’ Russell Westbrook Secures Third Straight Triple-Double Season
Russell Westbrook secured a third straight triple-double season with his third assist of the game against the Detroit Pistons on Friday night.
Earlier in the week, Russell Westbrook honoured the late rapper Nipsey Hussle with a 20-20-20 performance, the first since Wilt Chamberlain did it back in 1968.
“20 plus 20 plus 20 …. they know what that means,” Westbrook said following the game, referencing the Rollin’ 60s Crips gang Hussle was associated with. “That’s for my bro. Rest in peace, Nipsey. Grateful to play the game, but that wasn’t for me, man. That was for my bro, man. That was for Nipsey.”

But on Friday, en route to a 123-110 victory, Westbrook continued to etch his name into the history books.
“Just blessed, brother. I can’t even — I do what I do every single night, regardless of what anybody says, what they call it, what they say. I’m just thankful to all the teammates in this locker room, teammates over the last couple years, they made my job easy. I just try to do what I can to impact the game in every facet. I’ve said that every year, and I stand by it,” said Westbrook.
He is currently averaging 22.9 points, 10.6 assists, and 11.1 rebounds on the year. He has recorded 31 triple-doubles this season and is four shy of passing Magic Johnson (138) for second on the all time list. Oscar Robertson is atop the list with 181 career triple-doubles.
“I think the fact that he has done this three years in a row, people don’t understand what has happened, in my opinion,” said Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Billy Donovan. “And I’m shocked that they don’t talk about it. And I know they’re numbers, and I get all that stuff, but in terms of the historic part of the game, people are going to look back in time, and I think what he has done will be more appreciated later on than it is right now,” said Donovan.
Westbrook finished his night against the Pistons with 19 points, 15 assists, and eight rebounds.
