Adam Silver Aims to Make NBA Most Progressive Sport in the World
In a bid to continue to be viewed as the most progressive professional sports league in the United States, NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s goal is for at least half of its new referees to be women.
“I’m not sure how it has remained so male-dominated for so long because it’s an area of the game where physically, certainly, there’s no benefit of being a man, as opposed to a woman when it comes to refereeing,”
The counter argument here would be that the best referees should ref games, regardless of gender. With so much on the line, the performance of referees should always be prioritized before any potential (gender) quotas.
Currently, there are three female referees in the league: Ashley Moyer-Gleich, Natalie Sago and Lauren Holtkamp. Moving forward the plan will be to balance it out and make an effort to train and hire for female referees.
Along those lines, Silver also added that “there’s no reason why more women shouldn’t be coaching men’s basketball, too.”
That may take longer, especially if a head-coaching role is in question. Currently, there are only a handful of female assistant coaches, including Becky Hammon (San Antonio Spurs), Kristi Toliver (Washington Wizards), Natlie Nakase (LA Clippers) and Lindsey Harding (Philadelphia 76ers).
