Confident Ending

Masai’s Press Conference Ends in Confidence Ahead of Busy Offseason

You can’t do anything to effecting Masai Ujiri’s championship mood.

As the Toronto Raptors executive took to the podium one last time before free agency for his official season-ending press conference, Ujiri covered just about every topic imaginable. Ahead of the start of a very busy offseason, Ujiri emphasized that the goal remains to continue to win in Toronto.

“We’re really approaching it like we want to bring everyone back,” Ujiri said.

Of course, the elephant in the room was Kawhi Leonard’s pending free agency. Ujiri confirmed that he did meet with Leonard since the Raptors championship parade and while he did not provide much detail on their meeting, he did call it as a “positive” step in the right direction. Leonard, who opted out of the final year of his contract is eligible to sign a five year extension with the Raptors worth $190-million this offseason.

Additionally, Ujiri addressed recent rumours of other teams, specifically the Washington Wizards showing interest in his services.

“I love it here. My family loves it here… I want to win more,” explained Ujiri. “In my mind, I’m here.”

Other topics of note, Ujiri congratulated Pascal Siakam on winning the Most Improved Player of the Year award, while once again crediting Dwane Casey and DeMar DeRozan for the culture they helped build in Toronto. In DeRozan’s case specifically, Ujiri said that the two men have patched up their relationship and even hugged it out in the locker room when the San Antonio Spurs visited the Raptors in season.

And of course, what’s a Raptors news conference without a certain friend!
