Super Prospect RJ Hampton Signs 5-Year Shoe Deal with Li-Ning
RJ Hampton has been making waves the past couple of months.
First, the five-star basketball recruit opted to skip college in favour of turning pro, signing with the New Zealand Breakers of Australia’s National Basketball League. Now, the projected 2020 NBA Draft lottery pick has signed his first shoe deal and a lucrative one at that with Chinese brand Li-Ning.
The deal will span five years and is one of the more expensive deals ever handed out to a player projected to become a top NBA draft pick. The exact dollar amount of the deal is yet to be known according to sources close to ESPN.
“If drafted in the top 10 of the 2020 draft, the contract will become the richest Chinese shoe deal ever signed by a rookie,” ESPN wrote. “The deal’s total value would’ve made him one of the four highest-earning players in this year’s 2019 draft.”
Li-Ning has a strong presence in Asia and is represented by superstars of the calibre of CJ McCollum and Dwyane Wade.
“They’re just a great company,” Hampton said. “They’ve put a lot of work in with me, and they’ve really been behind me these last couple months, ever since I made my decision [to play in the NBL].”
Hampton also received interest from Nike, Puma, and Adidas.
Hampton’s father, Rod Hampton, added: “Li-Ning understands RJ has tremendous upside as a player, but also as a brand. It was a very thorough process with lots of interest, so we really took our time as a family and with our agents to fully evaluate the pros and cons of each company.”
With the next year of his life figured out and a shoe deal under his belt, the no. 2 ranked combo guard in the high school class of 2019 will now look to take his game to the next level.
