Rockets Owner Caught Off Guard by Team Decision To Move Melo
Carmelo Anthony had an incredibly short tenure with the Houston Rockets, playing nearly as many games as Antonio Brown spent days with the New England Patriots.
The move to part ways from Melo came as a surprise, if by anything, how short the tenure was.
If the leash was so short, why bother taking a gamble on the veteran in the first place? What was the mindset going into making this move?
A decision so surprisingly, it even shocked Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta, who spoke on the matter during an interview with SNY’s Ian Begley. The main purpose of the interview was to promote the Fertitta’s new book, but of course, a plethora of topics related to the Rockets was discussed.
“Basketball ops decided to make a decision and, you know, it kinda surprised me too, as a fan of the Houston Rockets. But I know what I know and I know what I don’t know. And if my basketball ops thought that we should move on, then I sure wasn’t going to tell them not to, even though I thought that Melo’s one the greatest players to ever play the game,” said Fertitta.
Fertitta said that he never had an opportunity to meet with Anthony during the former All-Stars short stint with the organization.
“You know, I heard how my basketball ops people handled it. You hear different stories at different times and how different things are perceived. And it’s disappointing that that’s the way it was. But I just don’t know enough facts about exactly how it went down.”
The Rockets owner did mention that he believes there is a place for Anthony in this league presently.
