Revising the Rules

NBA Board of Governors Address Traveling Violation Guidelines

It may be something that could be overlooked by many fans, but the NBA has opted to approve the revisions of a few rules regarding traveling violations.

The revisions themselves will not alter the substance of the rule, but rather will help bridge the gap between the way the rule is written and how it has been applied in NBA games by league officials. Specifically, the official rulebook will now have a section that describes and defines the “gather”.

“One of the most misunderstood rules in our game is how traveling is interpreted and appropriately called,” said Byron Spruell, NBA President, League Operations.  “Revising the language of certain areas of the rule is part of our three-pronged approach to address the uncertainty around traveling.  This approach also includes an enforcement plan to make traveling a point of emphasis for our officiating staff, along with an aggressive education plan to increase understanding of the rule by players, coaches, media and fans.”

Again, these are just minor news on a quiet Friday, but it is an important kink that the NBA has clearly viewed as important to work out.
