NBA Seriously Considering Starting a New Basketball League in India
A preseason contest isn’t the only plan the NBA has for India.
As the Sacramento Kings and Indiana Pacers are set to play the first NBA game in the country, commissioner Adam Silver said that the league is seriously considering launching a basketball league in India. The news first broke via Marc Spears of The Undefeated. Spears added that after speaking with Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive, an Indian native, the plan may turn into a reality sooner than later.
According to Ranadive, he spoke with Silver about create a 12-team league in India, which would have a similar framework as the Basketball Africa League, which is set to launch in March 2020. Silver hopes for the league to be up and running within the next five years, but before any concrete plans may be put in effect, India must improve its arena infrastructure.
Exciting things are on the horizon as the NBA’s global outreach continues to be second to none.
