NBA Discussing Mid-Season Tournament, Schedule Change, Much More
If you’re used to the status quo, look away.
The NBA and NBPA are discussing the possibility of making some massive changes, including instilling a mid-season tournament, playoff re-seedings, and changing the schedule.
In terms of the new tournament concept, the two sides are attempting to find common ground and a post-Thanksgiving tournament window, which would extend until mic-December, culminating before Christmas. The NBA has previously proposed the tournament to be held between late January and February. By moving the tournament before December, the league will not need to compete with the NFL playoffs or the NCAA’s conference tournament schedule.

Commissioner Adam Silver is hoping to follow a similar model as the one used in European soccer.
Among other discussions, the league is looking into the potential of re-seeding the four conference finalists and a postseason play-in tournament. Additionally, the NBA is considering shortening the regular season to no less than 78 games.
