Bucks Entering Pivotal Time with Giannis Approaching Free Agency
The Milwaukee Bucks are 24-4 and the early favourite to crack the Eastern Conference Finals.
They have the best basketball player in the conference and quite possibly, the best basketball player in the entire world. But after refusing to spend on Malcolm Brogdon in the offseason, the Bucks are entering a pivotal time in the franchise’s history. This upcoming offseason, Giannis Antetokounmpo has the opportunity to sign a supermax contract, meaning the Bucks must pull all the right strings to ensure they lock up The Greek Freak before he enters free agency in 2021.
“No,” team owner Marc Lasry said. “No. I think the approach is that you have a relationship, and you rely on that relationship. So, you know, at the end of the day, my view is that people are going to do what they think is in their best interests. And I hope their view ends up being the same as our view, right? We’re going to do whatever we can. Others will do whatever they can. It’s fine.”
Outside of the Bucks, the Toronto Raptors are one of the teams listed as potential players in the Antetokounmpo market if he is unable to come to terms with the Bucks before becoming a free agent.
“That’s great,” commented Lasry, on the rumours surrounding Giannis’ future with the team. “Whether it sounds dumb or not, I’m very comfortable with the relationship that we have with everybody on this team. And I think at the end of the day, what players want is stable ownership. They want a culture which is focused on winning. They want a coach who they respect. They want to play in a city that they love. It’s what we all want. Let’s be serious. You just want consistency, and you want to know that what you’re being told is reality. So I think as long as we do what we’re supposed to do, everything is going to be fine.”
This season is absolutely crucial for the Bucks and if they are unable to build off of last year’s success, Giannis’ future in a small market city may turn murky.
