Denver Nuggets Extend Head Coach Malone Through 2022-23 Season
For the Denver Nuggets, this was a no doubter.
Mike Malone has been instrumental to the Nuggets’ success over his five seasons with the organization, boasting a 194-163 mark over that span. The head coach led his team to the second round of the playoffs last season and currently has the Nuggets sitting in second in the Western Conference with a 21-9 record.
To reward him for his work, the Nuggets have extended the coach through the 2022-23 season.
“This season and team has been about continuity, with Coach Malone being the first piece of that,” stated team owner, Josh Kroenke. “We are thrilled to continue to have him lead this promising young roster and are excited about what the future holds. Coach Malone has been pivotal in this organization’s success and will continue to be so.”
One of the league’s worst defensive units prior to the hiring of Malone, the Nuggets have steadily improved throughout his tenure at the helm and currently rank second in the NBA in defensive rating. Meanwhile, international big man Nikola Jokic has developed into an offensive superstar and Jamal Murray is quickly growing into a star guard in his own right under the watch of Malone.
“We have been very fortunate to have Coach Malone lead our resurgence. His tireless work ethic and passion are clearly reflected in the continued improvement of our roster,” said the team president Tim Connelly. “We are all extremely excited for him to continue to lead our team as we try to build a championship level organization.”
The Nuggets hope to take yet another step forward in their development in the upcoming postseason.
