NBA Deliberating In-Season Tournament Award System
The in-season tournament talks are not going away.
The NBA is still deliberating the logistics of the tournament, discussing when it should take place and the award system that should be implemented. The most recent idea the NBA has suggested was paying each player of the winning team $1 million – for reference, an average NBA player makes approximately $9 million annually.
The 30-team tournament is by no means imminent, but it is under serious consideration for the 2021-22 season.
On another note, the NBA is also looking into shortening its season to 78 games, cutting out two home and road games from what is currently an 82 game slate. Similar to the tournament, Shams Charania of The Athletic believes that the NBA would implement the changes for the 2021-22 season.
With NBA rating seeing a significant decline this season, the league is looking to implement changes to maintain the popularity of the regular season.
