Dion Waiters Impresses at Lakers Workout, J.R. Smith Earns Tryout
By cutting ties with Troy Daniels, the Los Angeles Lakers have cleared up the space for a roster spot and it seems as though they are interested in adding one more playmaker.
The Lakers have notoriously struggled creating offence when LeBron James on the bench. This season, the Lakers boast a 116.2 offensive rating with James on the floor, as opposed to 109.6 offensive rating with James on the bench. The team’s net rating also drops from +11.0 to +0.1 when James leaves the floor.
As Vogel told reporters, Lakers have no imminent plans to add another player. They still plans to meet w/ Dion Waiters, per source, but now Lakers can react should an injury occur, or perhaps add another ballhandling guard/playmaker later. Rob Pelinka plans to take his time.

On Monday, the Lakers tried out Dion Waiters who was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies following the trade deadline. According to team officials, the veteran forward who ran into off-court problems earlier in the season with the Cleveland Cavaliers put on an “impressive showing”. Waiters is expected to meet with head coach Frank Vogel, as well as team executives Rob Pelinka and Kurt Rambis.
The Lakers are expected to try out J.R. Smith later in the week as well. Smith has not played in an NBA game since the 2018-19 season.
