NBA GMs Prefer Play-In Tournament Over Group Stage Style Postseason
Adam Silver took part in a conference call with the 30 league general managers on Thursday to discuss the potential formats for the 2019-20 season.
Each of the teams received a survey last week.
“There was zero commitment to any one plan,” a general manager told The Ringer. “But it was a call to gather more information.”
The results have began to trickle out. Half of the league’s GMs voted to go straight to the playoffs and cancel the remainder of the regular season, while just over a half voted to have a 1 to 16 playoff reseed, eliminating the concept of conferences. Interestingly enough, a play-in tournament received interest from 75 percent of teams, while a group stage concept garnered little traction.
“Adam isn’t taking the results seriously,” a team executive told The Ringer earlier in the week. “Every team is obviously gonna vote for what’s best for them.”
Either way, the NBA is moving towards coming down with a clearer idea of how the league will look once it returns to play.
