The NBA Expects to Have a Large Number of Players Kneeling for Anthem
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the NBA is expecting a large number of its players to kneel during the national anthem once the regular season resumes on Thursday.
Discussions between players has allegedly been ongoing on the matter.
“Players have been meeting over the last several days in their respective hotels, I’m told, and there’s a growing consensus for them to kneel during the national anthem,” said Charania. “Just imagine that picture of all the players in the NBA, or a large sum of them, kneeling for the national anthem. It’s a powerful message.”
Additionally, Charania reports that players may also choose to wear their own social justice shorts during warmups prior to games. To these points, these shorts have not been approved by the league, but at this time there does not seem to be any resistance from the NBA.
A number of NBA players have expressed their desire to continue to keep the conversation of social reform going as the season is set to re-start. Throughout the NBA’s hiatus, many players participated in Black Lives Matter protests in light of the murder of George Floyd back in May.
Do not expect the players to stay quiet as the season resumes.
